Find, understand, learn and discuss English idioms and expressions

You can browse alphabetically or search over thousands of idiom definitions on site, post your comments, suggest idioms for inclusion, tag idioms to allow easy grouping, subscribe to get idioms within your news feeds or receive via Email for drilling.

Search or navigate?

The idioms are usually arranged alphabetically within own section. So, if you are here to learn and understand some new idioms, then you may want to navigate using the menu.
If you are looking for particular idiom on this site, apparently the best way to find it is using the search mechanisms. At present there are two ways of searching available on site:
  • Google powered seach — main advantages: it's quick, independent on language context (always searches globally on site), it's heuristic. In general, all advantages of the Google engine.
  • Site powered search — search is performed only within current language context (i.e. if you search from within an English part of the site, you will get only pages available within the whole, but only English part). Besides, each search results page is translated into a custom feed which you can subscribe to.
So, try and choose whatever is more convenient for you.

Bringing English idioms to your desktop

For better drilling you can easily bring the idiom updates from the site right to your desktop.
The updates will be scrolled aside on your screen while you work or play at your computer, you may glance from time to time at those and see if you remember/know or don't the particular idiom's meaning or usage. If needed you just click on the idiom and see all the details.
To set the things up you can use a number of applications available for different platforms. For instance, for Windows Vista or XP you can use the SideBar application. It comes with Vista, however for XP needs to be installed separately.
We found it is pretty easy to use Snackr — a free rss ticker app. Once you installed and run Snackr, just go to the app. configuration and add the url of the feed you want from this site (for idioms see the target url for the orange rss icon on this page).
Make other settings as it is appropriate for you.
Enjoy.
